The sequel to the movie "Crazy Rich Asians" is still undecided, and the series version is coming first. "The Hollywood Reporter recently announced that this popular North American film from 7 years ago is being developed into a related series, with director Zhu Haowei and original novel author Guan Kaiwen serving as executive producers. When "Crazy Rich Asians," whose creators are all Asian, was released in North America in 2018, it sparked a phenomenal viewing frenzy.
HBO CEO Casey Blois revealed in 2024 that the work is being developed in a non film form. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Kevin Kwan's original trilogy will be adapted into a series produced by streaming platform Max. Adele Lin, one of the screenwriters for the movie version, will serve as the screenwriter and executive producer for the new series, and details such as the cast have not been confirmed yet.
Shortly after its release, the movie "Crazy Rich Asians" announced the development of a sequel film, which will be based on the second installment of Kevin Kwan's original trilogy, "Chinese Rich Girlfriend," and will be filmed in Shanghai. Due to the director's schedule and screenwriter's withdrawal, the sequel film came to a standstill: director Zhu Haowei had a busy schedule to direct "The Wicked Witch", and screenwriter Adele Lin withdrew from the project due to lower salary than the male screenwriter of the same film.
Previously, according to the "Deadline" website, a spin off film from "Crazy Rich Asians" is also under development, with Jiama Chen (Chen Jing) and Cen Yongkang "upgraded" as the main characters. The new film will focus on the romantic love story between the two. (Xu Yang)
